dancing: more fun in the philippines

one of my earliest memories as a child was hanging out in pistang pilipino, a restaurant somewhere in malate, where my mother used to perform with her filipino dance troupe. the place was a tourist destination during those days when malate was still, well, not the malate that it is now.
i’d watch them sometimes, but most of the time i’d be backstage whenever they’re rehearsing or performing. mama said one time, when they got back from rehearsal, they caught me eating her lip balm! apparently, its fruity smell had me thinking it was candy!
i digress.
i’ve been exposed to philippine folk dance since i was very young and i’ve always been quite fascinated by it. be it singkil, maglalatik, igorot, or maria clara, i like how it shows much about the richness of our history and culture. it is colorful, graceful and definitely a feast for the eyes. i truly wish filipinos appreciated it more.
i have dreams of coming up with a folk dance contest (marami akong ganitong mga pangarap hehe - see previous post), similar to the hiphop and street dance contests that’s such an in thing for kids. i think it might seem quite corny, but well, just a thought. who knows, it might get them to appreciate our own dance somehow.
a show similar to the ramayana ballet in yogyakarta would be nice too. that would surely be a treat for tourists and for filipinos looking to experience or learn more about their culture.
i am part of the latter. i googled about possible performances we can catch and was pleasantly surprised to find that the bayanihan dance troupe is still quite active and have peformances lined up - some of them for free. check it out here. maybe we’ll bump into each other in one of those shows :)

how about a paper thin, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth lengua de gato?

say hello to lourdjean’s lengua de gato. i wonder if the owners are named lourdes and jean, since we filipinos love to combine names like that hehe :) anyways…
this was an awesome find at the eastwood weekend gourmet market. it costs somewhere around P200 per jar - a little pricey for something that can be bought at a much cheaper price in pasalubong stores, groceries, or cafeterias, but it’s totally worth it. once you pop a piece in your mouth - apologies to pringles - you just can’t stop.
i have always been a fan of lengua de gato and other pinoy pasalubong fare. whenever mike and i go to laguna and make a pit stop at a gas station somewhere along the south luzon expressway, i always buy some goods at the pasalubong stall, like barquiron, yema, polvoron, and mango-tamarind candies. hmmm… maybe it’s because buying these goodies makes me feel like i traveled to somewhere far when i really just went to laguna :)
i actually have dreams of putting up my own pasalubong store, one that offers the products in a really nice packaging, kind of like japan’s shiroi koibito and royce. having been exposed to lovely goodies from japan ever since i was young, i definitely believe in the power of good packaging.
after all, that’s how the experience starts right? from slowly unwrapping a beautiful package that holds the promise of a gastronomical euphoria.

when i was a contestant in singing bee (along with nicole hyala and mr. fu) a few years ago, i was pitted against victor basa in the final round. i thought i had it in the bag because surely he wouldn’t be familiar with the “masa” songs.
to my surprise, he actually beat me to completing the lyrics of jeremiah’s “nanghihinayang!”
our team ended up winning but i couldn’t get over how victor basa actually knew the lyrics to “nanghihinayang” :)
(posting this because i saw “one more chance” on cinema one, and the “nanghihinayang” scene was such a winner hehe)

antsy.
i’ve been feeling quite antsy the past few days, like i’m waiting for something big to happen or i’m looking for a creative outlet.
i’m kind of feeling the need to book a flight to somewhere, record an ad (without thinking of the pay because it can take years and the wait is dreadful), write a song (or maybe a poem, seeing as how i don’t play any musical instrument), host a big event, buy a pair of dr. martens and upgrade my point-and-shoot camera.
maybe blogging will do for now.

play time
we have this game with sloan where we pretend to be asleep - eyes closed and snoring - and he has to wake us up by kissing us on the cheek. when we “wake up,” we act surprised to see him there and it makes him laugh (music to our ears!). after that, he pretends to be asleep - snoring, but with eyes wide open - and he won’t stop until we kiss him.
it’s so cute how he can now play silly games like this with us :) i still get amazed at how fast he’s growing up. every single day.
